Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père et Fils is one of Burgundy's oldest houses and among the largest owners of Côte d'Or vineyards, with its cellars set in the fifteenth-century Château de Beaune. Its domaine-grown wines include an important collection of grand cru holdings on the hill of Corton.
Le Corton is Bouchard's flagship red from this hill, a Pinot Noir grand cru drawn from the domaine's own parcels on the upper slopes of Corton, including the lieu-dit Le Corton itself, near the top of the hill above Aloxe-Corton. The cooler, higher sites tend to produce a refined and structured expression of Corton rouge.
When young, Corton is typically dense and firmly tannic, and it rewards patience. The 2002 vintage was a balanced, healthy year in the Côte de Beaune, and this wine shows red and black fruits, spice and a touch of oak in its youth, developing with age toward savoury notes of liquorice, earth, game and forest floor over fine, resolved tannins. It is an excellent match for roast game birds, beef or mushroom dishes.
