Chambertin is the most famous grand cru of Gevrey-Chambertin and one of the great vineyards of Burgundy, its east-facing slope sitting just above the Route des Grands Crus. Wines from this site are known for their depth, structure and remarkable ageing potential.
Jean-Marie Fourrier sources this Chambertin from a plot of venerable vines, around 70 years old, lying alongside the Route des Grands Crus. It appears under his négociant label, introduced in 2011 to complement the family's Domaine Fourrier, which he has run since 1994 after working with Henri Jayer and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon.
The winemaking mirrors the domaine: meticulous sorting, mostly destemmed fruit, native-yeast fermentation, gentle hand punch-downs and gravity movement into barrel, with no more than a modest proportion of new oak and very little sulphur. It is a profound, transparent expression of Chambertin's power and finesse, best given years in the cellar to unfold.
