Clos des Lambrays is one of the great walled vineyards of the Côte de Nuits, first recorded in the archives of Cîteaux Abbey around 1365 and elevated to Grand Cru status in 1981. Domaine des Lambrays owns 8.66 of its roughly 8.84 hectares, all but a tiny sliver of the clos. The triangular, east-facing vineyard climbs some 60 metres from bottom to top over red and brown clays and limestone, with rows running across the slope, and around 70 percent of its Pinot Noir vines were planted between 1898 and 1935.
Part of the LVMH group since 2014 and directed by Jacques Devauges since 2019, the estate converted to organic farming in 2019 and biodynamics in 2020. The clos is farmed and vinified as 11 separate parcels in a gravity-fed winery, with the lots reunited just before bottling.
2023 brought an abundant crop, and the team carried out a green harvest in late July, something the domaine normally avoids, to concentrate the vines' energy on fewer bunches. Around 80 percent of the fruit was fermented as whole clusters, and the wine was raised in a significant proportion of new oak.
The result is a generous, seductive Clos des Lambrays with dark cherry and red berry fruit, spice and fine-grained tannins over a mineral, limestone-driven core, built for long ageing.
