Jean-Luc Jamet is one of the Northern Rhone's most respected growers, based in Ampuis at the heart of Cote-Rotie. Since dividing the historic family estate in 2013, he has continued to farm parcels of schist-dominated slopes with the same attention to detail that made the Jamet name famous. This Syrah Valine is bottled as IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, sourced from a high plateau above Ampuis, just outside the official Cote-Rotie boundary, on brown schist soils linked to the Cote Brune.
It is one hundred per cent Syrah, fermented with a portion of whole bunches and matured in Burgundy barrels, giving a wine that drinks like a little Cote-Rotie. Expect blackberry, dark cherry and cracked pepper aromas lifted by violet, smoked meat and a savoury, mineral edge. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a long, peppery, perfumed finish.
Serve with grilled lamb, roast beef, peppered steak, game or hard cheeses, and decant for a short time to let the aromatics open. A little cellaring will only add to its complexity.
