Clarendon Hills is a McLaren Vale producer devoted to single-vineyard wines from old, dry-grown vines, and the Onkaparinga Syrah comes from one of its most prized sites. The Onkaparinga Vineyard lies along the upper north-western ridges of Blewitt Springs, where old vines grow in deep sandy soils over ironstone, shale and quartz pebbles. Clarendon Hills regards it as one of its Grand Cru Syrah vineyards.
The low-yielding vines are hand-picked and fermented with wild yeast, with around 60% of the fruit kept as whole berries. The wine then matures for 18 months in one to five-year-old French oak and is bottled at the winery without fining or filtration, in a small production run.
Blue and purple florals and warm spice lead the way on the nose, followed by boysenberry, blueberry, wild raspberry, blackberry and a hint of crème de violette, lifted by clove and pepper. The palate is full-bodied yet polished, with fine tannins, a creamy texture and savoury notes of black olive, smoked meat, dried herbs and wet stone on the finish.
