Hurley Vineyard was established in 1998 by Kevin Bell and Tricia Byrnes on a small volcanic hill at Balnarring, in the south-east of the Mornington Peninsula. The vineyard is planted solely to Pinot Noir, with three distinct blocks each bottled as its own single-vineyard wine. Garamond is the most sought-after of the trio.
The Garamond block is planted to the MV6 clone on deep volcanic soils. East-facing and warmed by the morning sun, it is always the last parcel picked each year, and that extended hang time produces a darker, more brooding style of Mornington Pinot.
The result is a wine of depth and structure, with soft red fruits joined by savoury notes of mushroom, game and cake spice, and firm tannins that give grip and ageing potential. Complex and layered, it rewards patience in the cellar.
