From one of the Mosel's most revered estates, the Heymann-Lowenstein Uhlen Roth Lay Grosses Gewachs is a dry Riesling of extraordinary depth and complexity. The Uhlen Roth Lay vineyard spans just 1.6 hectares of precipitously steep, south-facing slopes above the Mosel River near Winningen, planted with vines averaging over 60 years of age — many of them ungrafted. The name "Roth Lay" refers to the iron-bearing red Devonian slate that defines this parcel, imparting a distinctive mineral signature unlike any other site in the region.
Classified as a VDP.Grosse Lage — the German equivalent of Grand Cru — this wine is fermented exclusively with wild yeast and aged for a minimum of one year on lees in traditional wooden casks, with no enzymes or fining agents used. The result is a Riesling of remarkable concentration and structure, often likened to a great white Burgundy. Expect a quiet, contemplative nose that unfolds slowly to reveal layers of stone fruit, wet slate, and subtle ferrous minerality, all carried by perfectly ripe acidity and a silky, dense texture.
The 2023 vintage offers an exceptionally harmonious profile, with deep pH values lending superb balance and the potential for decades of cellaring. Cool, focused, and utterly compelling — this is a wine that demands your full attention and rewards it generously.
