Langhe Nebbiolo is where a serious Barolo house shows its hand at a friendlier scale. This is Nebbiolo from the Mascarello family's holdings in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, made with the same attention as the estate's Barolo but shaped to be enjoyed while it is young, fragrant and full of fruit.
The aromatics are pure varietal Nebbiolo: rose petal, red cherry, raspberry and a lift of dried herbs and sweet spice. The palate is medium bodied and bright, with supple tannins and the firm acid line that makes the variety such a good match for food. There is a savoury, earthy finish that hints at the more serious wines in the family cellar.
Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio have been making wine since 1881 and work in a resolutely traditional style from their cellar at Monchiero. Serve this with tomato based pasta, roast poultry, mushroom risotto or a simple plate of salumi.
