Founded in the village of Barbaresco in 1859, Gaja is one of the most influential names in Italian wine. Under Angelo Gaja the estate helped bring Piedmont to the world's attention through meticulous viticulture and cellar work, and today the family's next generation continues that focus on precision and site expression.
The estate's Barbaresco is a blend of Nebbiolo from more than a dozen of the family's own vineyards spread through the Barbaresco and Treiso communes, with vines averaging around 40 years of age. Each parcel is vinified separately with native yeasts before the wine is matured in oak, then assembled and given further time in large casks to integrate.
In the glass it typically offers ripe cherry and strawberry fruit lifted by violets, wild rose and fresh herbs, with sweet spice, liquorice and hints of blood orange and black tea. The palate is polished and layered, built on fine, firm tannins and fresh acidity, with the depth and balance to develop beautifully in the cellar over many years.
Enjoy with roast veal, braised beef, mushroom or truffle risotto, or aged hard cheeses.
