Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio have farmed the Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto since 1904, and it remains the reference point for the house. Six hectares of prime mid slope at roughly 280 metres, planted to the Michet strain of Nebbiolo, worked by a family that has been in wine since 1881 and has resisted every passing trend along the way.
Mauro Mascarello took the reins in 1967 and set the course that still holds today: lower yields, rigorous sorting of the bunches, long macerations and patient ageing in large oak casks. The result is a Barolo of aroma and line rather than weight, with rose, wild cherry, dried orange peel and a savoury, earthy edge that builds as it sits in the glass.
Tannins are fine and persistent, acidity keeps everything taut, and the finish runs long and mineral. Cellar it if you can, or give it a generous decant and pair it with slow braised beef, mushrooms or aged hard cheese.
