Dr. Loosen is one of the Mosel's most celebrated estates, with roots stretching back more than two centuries. Ürziger Würzgarten ("Ürzig's Spice Garden") is perhaps the most distinctive of the great middle-Mosel sites, a steep amphitheatre of red volcanic and weathered slate soils above the village of Ürzig that gives Riesling its famously exotic, spicy character. The Grosses Gewächs is drawn from the estate's oldest vines on this remarkable cru.
The 2024 is true to the cru's exotic signature. The nose layers spicy, peppery aromas with anise, dried herbs, ripe stone fruit and a faint Gewürztraminer-like lift unique to the site. The palate is dry, textural and deeply mineral, with gentle acidity, layered fruit and a long, lingering finish; complex, distinctive and with serious cellar potential.
A characterful dry Riesling for spiced Asian cuisine, smoked salmon, charcuterie or duck with stone-fruit accompaniments.
