Dr. Loosen is one of the Mosel's most celebrated estates, with roots in the region stretching back more than two centuries. Erdener Treppchen is one of the great single sites of the middle Mosel, the dramatic terraced amphitheatre above the village of Erden where bright red, iron-rich slate produces Rieslings of unusual spice and density. The Grosses Gewächs is drawn from the estate's oldest, ungrafted vines on this cru.
The 2024 is compact, crisp and densely structured. A striking nose of sliced fennel, fennel seed, red apple and ripe quince leads the way, layered with red-slate spice and pithy citrus. The palate is taut and saline, with a streak of cool minerality that drives the long finish; this is a serious dry Riesling that will reward years in the cellar.
An exceptional match for Asian-spiced seafood, smoked trout, charcuterie or roast pork with mustard.
