Les Mitans sits mid slope in Volnay, in the heart of the village's run of premier crus, and it has a reputation for producing wine that is supple and openly perfumed while still carrying a proper frame. It is a classic expression of what Volnay does better than anywhere in Burgundy.
The aromatics arrive early and generously: red cherry, raspberry, violet and rose, with a savoury note of crushed stone and undergrowth building behind. The palate is silky and finely drawn, tannins soft but present, acidity keeping everything lifted through a long, gently spiced finish.
Domaine Yvon Clerget traces its roots in Volnay to 1268, and Thibaud Clerget, the twenty eighth generation, has led the cellar since 2015 after working with Henri Boillot, Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and Charles Van Canneyt at Hudelot-Noellat. Around ten hectares are farmed today across Volnay, Pommard and Meursault. Lovely with duck, veal, game birds or mushroom dishes.
