Clos du Verseuil is the jewel of Domaine Yvon Clerget, a walled premier cru of just 0.68 hectares in Volnay that the family bought in 1936 and has owned outright ever since. It sits alongside the celebrated Taillepieds, and as a monopole every bottle comes from this one enclosed vineyard.
The Clerget family planted their first vines in Volnay in 1268, which makes this one of the oldest continuously family run estates in Burgundy. Thibaud Clerget is the twenty eighth generation and took charge of the cellar with the 2015 vintage, having trained with Henri Boillot, at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and alongside Charles Van Canneyt at Hudelot-Noellat.
The wine is quintessential Volnay: perfumed, silky and precise rather than powerful. Red cherry, wild strawberry, rose and violet lead into a palate of fine, cashmere textured tannin, with a savoury mineral undertow and a long, elegant finish. The domaine now covers around ten hectares across Volnay, Pommard and Meursault. Give this some time in the cellar, or decant and serve with duck, veal or mushroom dishes.
