Les Rugiens is the great premier cru of Pommard and the one most often argued should have been promoted to grand cru. The name comes from the iron rich red clay that colours the soil, and that iron is exactly what gives the wine its unmistakable depth and mineral bite.
Where the domaine's Volnay bottlings lead with perfume, Rugiens leads with power. The nose is dark and brooding, black cherry, plum, liquorice, iron filings and dried spice, opening slowly into something more floral with air. The palate is broad shouldered and firmly tannic, deeply savoury, with the length and structure to reward a decade or more in the cellar.
Domaine Yvon Clerget has farmed in Volnay and Pommard since 1268. Thibaud Clerget, the twenty eighth generation, has been in charge since the 2015 vintage after training with Henri Boillot, Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and Charles Van Canneyt at Hudelot-Noellat. Cellar it if you can, and when you open it give it a long decant alongside slow cooked beef, venison or hare.
