The Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes is a cornerstone of Domaine Lignier-Michelot, the family estate Virgile Lignier has led in his home village since 2000. It is assembled from three old-vine village parcels, Les Cognées, Très Girard and Les Chenevery, giving a wine with more depth and concentration than a standard village bottling.
Virgile's approach in the vineyard is hands-on and low-input: herbicides were abandoned in favour of ploughing, and green harvesting is used to limit yields. In the cellar the style is classic modern Morey, with a high proportion of whole-cluster fermentation, gentle remontage rather than heavy punch-downs, and a measured share of new oak during barrel ageing.
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy delivered ripeness while keeping freshness intact, and this wine shows that balance well. Look for perfumed red and dark cherry fruit, a spicy, floral lift from the whole bunches and a supple, finely structured palate.
