Mee Godard built her reputation on old-vine Morgon after taking over her Beaujolais estate in 2013. She has since added a small foothold in Moulin-à-Vent, the cru often called the king of Beaujolais for its depth and longevity. All her vineyards are farmed organically and cropped at low yields.
Deschanes is a small parcel of Gamay planted higher on the slope than her Au Michelon vines, on stony granitic ground. The wine ferments in concrete with a portion of whole bunches and a long maceration, then matures in oak barrels before bottling without filtration. It shows a transparent, open bouquet of red fruits and violets. The medium-bodied palate offers tart red cherry, a chalky, wet-stone freshness, gentle grip and a crunchy, focused finish. This is a more restrained and elegant style of Moulin-à-Vent.
Serve it in a large Pinot Noir glass alongside roast pork, veal, coq au vin or aged Comté.
