Mee Godard is one of the most exciting names in Beaujolais. After working in Burgundy, she bought her own estate in 2013 and settled in the region, building a small domaine of around six hectares, mostly in Morgon, distinguished by very old vines that average around 60 years of age. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2017, with biodynamics the stated goal for the future.
Her Moulin-à-Vent comes from the lieu-dit Les Michelons, a parcel of just over a hectare that joined the domaine in 2017. Moulin-à-Vent is often regarded as the most structured and age-worthy of the ten Beaujolais crus, its Gamay drawing depth and grip from the region's granite-based soils.
Yields are kept low, and the wine is fermented in concrete vats with a maceration of around three weeks before ageing for 12 to 18 months in oak barrels or vats. The result is a serious, savoury Gamay with dark cherry, plum and floral notes, a firm mineral backbone and the structure to age well, showing why Moulin-à-Vent is often compared with the wines of the Côte d'Or.
