Domaine Louis Michel & Fils is one of the historic Chablis families, working a 25-hectare estate established in the mid-nineteenth century. Under Guillaume Michel the house pioneered the all-stainless-steel style of Chablis in the 1980s, and continues to vinify and age every wine without oak so that the Kimmeridgian limestone of the appellation comes through unfiltered.
Les Clos is widely regarded as the king of the Chablis Grand Crus, a steep south-facing amphitheatre at the heart of the Grand Cru hillside on the right bank of the Serein. Its deep Kimmeridgian marl and exceptional sun exposure give some of the most powerful and ageworthy whites in Burgundy.
The 2023 is precise, deep and full-bodied, with cherry blossom, white pepper, fennel seed and chalky minerality lifting from the glass. The palate is robust and finely structured, with bright acidity and a long, harmonious close. A serious cellar candidate that asks for time before showing its full hand.
