Cailleret is generally held to be the finest premier cru in Chassagne-Montrachet, and its position explains why: it sits immediately alongside Le Montrachet on the Chassagne side of the boundary, sharing the same mid-slope exposure. The name comes from the stones that litter the vineyard, and that shallow, rocky ground is the source of the wine's particular finesse.
Aromas of lemon oil, white peach and acacia are underpinned by crushed stone and a light hazelnut note. The palate is beautifully poised, with clarity and drive rather than weight, a chalky mineral texture running the length of it and a long, precise, saline finish.
Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard founded this domaine in 1980, bringing together the Blain name with the vineyards of Claudine's father Jacques Gagnard. The family works roughly eight hectares in Chassagne-Montrachet, including premier crus in Morgeot, Boudriotte and Cailleret and parcels in Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet.
