Clos de la Roche is the largest and most celebrated grand cru of Morey-Saint-Denis, and it is the wine the Raphet family have on their doorstep. The name refers to the rock beneath it, a shallow, stony bed of hard limestone that produces one of the most structured and longest lived reds on the Cote de Nuits.
The Raphet interpretation is pale in colour and completely deceptive for it. Beneath the surface sits real power: black cherry, damson, liquorice, dried rose, gamey undergrowth and a mineral, almost stony core. Tannins are firm, fine and long, acidity keeps the whole thing taut, and the finish stretches out with layer after layer of savoury detail.
Domaine Gerard Raphet was established in the 1920s and is now in its fourth generation, Gerard working alongside his daughter Marion across twelve hectares. Fruit comes from very old Pinot Noir, some vines beyond a century, and the cellar approach is minimal: light extraction, around fifteen per cent new oak, no fining and no filtration. This is a wine to bury in the cellar and forget about for a decade.
