Monthelie is one of the quieter villages of the Côte de Beaune, tucked between Volnay and Meursault, and its reds have long been a source of value for those who know where to look. This bottling comes from very old vines and is made by Domaine Dugat-Py, the celebrated Gevrey-Chambertin estate run by Loïc Dugat, the thirteenth generation of a family growing here since the early seventeenth century.
Farming is organic and meticulous. Only organic preparations have been used since 2003, biodynamic teas are made on the estate, some rows are worked by horse and the canopy is left untrimmed. In the cellar the wine sees no cold soak and no correction, ferments with a proportion of whole bunches, ages in oak barrels of which only a small share are new, and goes into bottle unfined and unfiltered.
Very old vines give this real depth for the appellation. Red and dark cherry fruit carries hints of undergrowth, violets and warm spice, with a firm, savoury structure and fine tannins that suggest patience will be rewarded. Try it with game birds, mushroom dishes or aged hard cheeses.
