Cuvée Coeur du Roy is Domaine Dugat-Py's very old vine village Gevrey-Chambertin, drawn from three separate lieux-dits: Les Épointures, Combes du Dessus and Les Marchais. The vines behind it were planted between 1910 and 1965, and that age shows in the concentration and depth of the wine.
The Dugat family has farmed in Gevrey-Chambertin since the early seventeenth century, with Loïc Dugat now the thirteenth generation. The vineyards are worked organically, treated only with organic preparations and biodynamic teas made on the estate, with horses used in some parcels and untrimmed canopies. Vinification is traditional and uncorrected: no cold soak, a generous proportion of whole bunches, extended barrel ageing and bottling without fining or filtration in the estate's eleventh century cellar, L'Aumônerie.
This is a powerful, layered Gevrey. Blueberry and black cherry fruit is wrapped in violets, aniseed and dark spice, with succulent tannins, striking mid palate volume and a long, mineral close. It is a serious cellaring wine that will reward a decade or more, and benefits from a generous decant if opened young.
