The Hautes Côtes de Nuits sits in the hills immediately behind the famous slope of the Côte de Nuits, higher and noticeably cooler than the villages below. That extra altitude suits Chardonnay, giving whites with tension and drive, and this is Domaine Dugat-Py's take on it.
Dugat-Py is best known for the old vine reds of Gevrey-Chambertin, where the family has grown vines since the early seventeenth century. The same discipline applies here: organic farming with only organic preparations used since 2003, herbal teas prepared on the estate, horse work in some parcels, and a light touch in the cellar. The wine is fermented and matured in oak barrels and bottled with minimal handling.
Expect a bright, finely drawn white. Citrus and white orchard fruit lead, backed by white flowers, a hint of hazelnut from barrel ageing and a chalky, saline finish. It is a versatile wine at the table, good with seafood, roast chicken or soft cheeses, and has the structure to develop over several years.
