Grands Echezeaux is one of the most revered grand crus of the Côte de Nuits, a compact vineyard of around nine hectares in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux that borders the upper wall of the Clos de Vougeot. Its gentle slope and deep limestone and clay soils are prized for wines of power, depth and silky texture.
This bottling comes from Jean-Marie Fourrier, who has run the family's Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1994 after working alongside Henri Jayer and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon. His négociant label, launched in 2011, brings in fruit from select long-held parcels, vinified with the same care as the domaine wines.
Fourrier's approach is famously hands-off: rigorous sorting, mostly destemmed fruit, native-yeast fermentations, gentle hand punch-downs, gravity movement to barrel and only a modest proportion of new oak, with sulphur kept to a minimum. The aim is a transparent, finely detailed Pinot Noir that lets this exceptional site speak clearly and rewards patient cellaring.
