Arnaud Mortet has quickly become one of the most sought-after young growers in Gevrey-Chambertin. Son of the legendary Denis Mortet, he launched his own label alongside the family estate after a retiring vigneron passed a small holding to him and his sister Clemence, debuting in 2016. His Charmes-Chambertin comes from the northern end of the Grand Cru, on stony, chalk-rich red soil worked by vines of forty years and more.
This is a Grand Cru red Burgundy made from Pinot Noir, vinified with low yields, gentle handling and a restrained use of new oak. Expect a vivid, fragrant wine of blueberry and dark berry fruit, with hints of olive and a fresh, saline mineral lift, a medium-bodied frame and silky tannins leading to a long, refined close.
This is a wine to cellar, or to decant generously if drinking young. Pair it with roast duck, game birds, beef or earthy mushroom dishes for a memorable match.
