Les Gouttes d'Or, "drops of gold", sits at the northern end of Meursault toward Volnay and has a long reputation for producing the richest and most opulent whites in the village. It is one of four Meursault premier cru sites farmed by Domaine Buisson-Battault, alongside Charmes, Genevrières and Porusots.
The domaine works around eight and a half hectares organically across fourteen appellations and is essentially a white wine producer. François Buisson aims for balance above all, avoiding both the heavy buttery style of an earlier generation and the thin, over extracted wines sometimes made in pursuit of freshness. The wine spends twelve months in oak barrel with roughly a fifth new, then at least six months in tank on fine lees, with no bâtonnage.
This is the generous end of Meursault handled with restraint. Ripe peach, apricot and citrus are layered with honey, toasted hazelnut and white flowers, and the palate is broad and creamy while a firm mineral line and bright acidity keep it in shape. It will drink well for a decade or more.
