Morgeot is by some distance the largest of the Chassagne-Montrachet premier crus, occupying the southern end of the commune towards Santenay where the soils turn heavier and more clay-rich. That weight of soil translates directly into the glass, giving one of the fullest and most powerful white wines in the village, built for the table rather than for delicate sipping.
Ripe yellow peach, quince and lemon curd lead, with hazelnut, butter and a touch of toasted spice from barrel behind. The palate is broad and rounded, with real density of fruit across the middle, and the finish is long, savoury and gently nutty with a mineral edge holding it in place.
Domaine Blain-Gagnard has been a Chassagne fixture since 1980, when Jean-Marc Blain married Claudine Gagnard and the two oenology graduates set up together on vineyards from the Gagnard side of the family. Their son Marc-Antonin now works alongside them across roughly eight hectares, almost all of it within the commune.
