Chassagne-Montrachet sits at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, closer to this domaine's Maranges base than any of the other great white villages. Its wines are firmer and more citrus-led than Meursault, with the limestone never far below the surface, and they carry a little more flesh than neighbouring Puligny.
The nose offers grapefruit, lemon pith and white blossom over a subtle nutty note and a whiff of struck flint. The palate is precise and nicely weighted, with crisp orchard fruit, a chalky grip and bright acidity carrying a clean, mineral finish.
The Bachelet name has been in Chassagne for generations; the brothers' grandfather founded Domaine Bernard Bachelet et Fils there, and their father Jean-François made wine at that estate for most of his career. Marc and Alexandre started out on their own in 2005 with vines from their father and a Monnot uncle, and the estate now runs to around 23 hectares stretching from the Hautes-Côtes to Pommard.
