Domaine Denis Mortet is among the most respected estates in Gevrey-Chambertin, founded by Denis Mortet and now led by his son Arnaud. Les Champonnets is a Premier Cru sitting high near the entrance of the Lavaux combe, on the same line as the Grands Crus and close to Ruchottes-Chambertin. Its position, paired with deep, limestone-rich soils, gives a wine of both freshness and structure.
This Pinot Noir is deep and richly flavoured, showing plush blackberry and a floral, spiced complexity. The cool valley influence lends fruity freshness and excellent length, while the limestone shows through in the wine's drive and definition, framing the fruit with fine, well-judged tannins.
A Premier Cru worth a few years in the cellar, it is best decanted and served at cool cellar temperature. Enjoy it with roast lamb, duck, game or mature cheeses.
