Mazoyeres-Chambertin is the quieter half of a shared identity. It occupies the southern stretch of ground alongside Charmes-Chambertin, and growers are entitled to label it as Charmes, which is why so few bottles carry the Mazoyeres name. Domaine Gerard Raphet keep it separate, and the distinction is worth having.
Where Charmes leans towards charm, Mazoyeres leans towards earth and structure. The soils here are stonier and less generous, and the wine that results is firmer, more savoury and slower to reveal itself. Dark cherry, damson and blood orange are wrapped in liquorice, dried herb, undergrowth and a mineral, faintly iron like note. The tannins are finer and more tightly wound, and the finish is long and serious.
The domaine has been in Morey-Saint-Denis since the 1920s and is now in its fourth generation, Gerard working with his daughter Marion. Old vines, light extraction, around fifteen per cent new oak, no fining and no filtration produce reds that are pale in the glass and remarkably intense on the palate. This wants time in the cellar, then game, beef or a truffled dish.
