Domaine Denis Mortet is one of the great names of Gevrey-Chambertin, an estate built up by Denis Mortet and his wife Laurence and today led by Laurence with their children Arnaud and Clemence. Farming a patchwork of Premier Cru and Grand Cru parcels in the Cote de Nuits, the domaine is known for meticulous vineyard work and detailed winemaking. This Premier Cru comes from Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a prized climat running up the Combe de Lavaux close to the famous Clos Saint-Jacques.
Made from Pinot Noir, it is a wine of depth and finesse. Look for dark cherry, blackcurrant and wild berry fruit lifted by violet, spice and a subtle smoky, mineral character. The palate is concentrated yet velvety, with a tightly knit structure, ripe tannins and a long, persistent finish that unfolds slowly in the glass and rewards patient cellaring.
Serve with roast lamb, beef, duck, game or mushroom dishes, and decant young bottles to let the perfume emerge. Best enjoyed slightly cool in a large Burgundy glass.
