Nuits-Saint-Georges sits at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits and produces some of the firmest, most structured Pinot Noir in Burgundy. The wines are typically dark, earthy and a little reserved in youth, built on tannin and savour rather than immediate perfume, and they need time before the fruit comes forward.
Now with a decade behind it, this has moved well into its secondary phase. Dried black cherry and plum sit alongside forest floor, leather, truffle and a note of sweet spice. The palate has softened and turned silky, with the tannins resolved into the fruit and a long, savoury, gently earthy finish. It is drinking beautifully.
David Duband has run the family domaine at Chevannes since 1991, converting all the vineyards to organic farming by 2006 and using generous proportions of whole bunches throughout the range. The cellar's reputation was built on exactly this kind of wine: structured Côte de Nuits Pinot that repays a decade in the rack.
