Racines is a Sta. Rita Hills project founded by Étienne de Montille of Domaine de Montille in Volnay, bringing a Burgundian sensibility to one of California's most exciting cool-climate Pinot Noir regions. The team settled on the Sta. Rita Hills after a 2016 search of California's vineyards, drawn by access to outstanding sites, local expertise and the region's diverse soils.
This wine comes from the upper plantings of La Rinconada, a celebrated vineyard planted by Rick Sanford in the 1990s that neighbours the famed Sanford & Benedict site. Its deep, dark, rocky soils give Pinot Noir of real concentration and grip. The fruit is fermented with indigenous yeasts and a generous share of whole clusters, then aged in French barriques with a measured proportion of new oak.
In the glass it is aromatic, savoury and a little wild, with sweet red cherry, rose petal, blood orange, sage and lavender, constantly evolving as it opens up.
