By Farr is one of Australia's most admired small producers, working closely held vineyards at Bannockburn in the cool Geelong region of Victoria. Their Shiraz comes from cool-climate plantings dating back to 1994, and it is made with the finesse and detail more often reserved for Pinot Noir.
A small portion of Viognier is co-fermented with the Shiraz, weaving in lifted aromatics and a silky texture. Expect black cherry and dark plum with black olive and a flicker of floral perfume, over a palate that is savoury and supple, packed with dark fruit and a lick of barrel spice, all framed by fine, commanding tannins.
Elegant and structured rather than heavy, it is a cool-climate Shiraz built to drink well now and to age gracefully.
