Chartogne-Taillet is a terroir-driven family estate in Merfy, north-west of Reims, run since 2006 by Alexandre Chartogne. Worked closely with renowned soil analysts Claude and Lydia Bourguignon, Alexandre produces a kaleidoscope of parcel-selection Champagnes from his 11 hectares, with Les Couarres being one of his signature single-vineyard bottlings.
Les Couarres is a lieu-dit in the heart of Merfy on a gentle south-facing slope, where Alexandre owns two parcels — one on tuffeau (soft, fine-grained limestone also found in the Loire) and another on deep clay soil. The blend here typically combines 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay from vines planted between 1970 and 2009. Expect a fine, precise and mineral-driven Champagne with both the warmth and the stony backbone of the site.
Organically farmed fruit is aged in 2–3-year-old barrels placed in the coolest part of the cellar and topped up regularly, as this cuvée is particularly sensitive to oxidation. Dosed as an Extra Brut (around 5 g/L).
