Benjamin Leroux is a Beaune-born winemaker who learnt his craft over fifteen vintages as manager of Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard, before founding his own domaine and négoce in 2007. His own vines are certified organic and farmed biodynamically, and for purchased fruit he buys grapes only, working with growers who farm sustainably, organically or biodynamically.
His village Volnay is a blend of lieux-dits that shifts with each vintage. Over recent years it has drawn on Les Grands Champs and La Gigotte, along with Les Grands Poisots and Les Petits Poisots on the Pommard border, and at times younger vines from premier cru sites such as Les Mitans and Santenots. Leroux hand-selects the best bunches at the sorting table, and a small portion of whole bunches is included in some years.
Fermentation is with ambient yeasts and a maceration of around three weeks, followed by ageing mostly in barrel with no more than 30% new oak. The result is a perfumed, aromatic Volnay, with red-fruited Pinot Noir character and gentle tannins wrapped in a supple texture.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
