Bannockburn Vineyards was established in 1974 by Stuart Hooper on the plains north west of Geelong, planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in tribute to his love of Burgundy. The estate remains in family hands and its vineyards were certified organic in 2021.
The Serré block was planted in 1984 at close to 7,000 vines per hectare, several times the density common in Australia at the time, and is likely the oldest high density planting in the country. The competition between the vines keeps yields naturally low, and the fruit is fermented in small open vessels and matured in French oak.
Serré is the most concentrated and longest lived of the Bannockburn Pinots. Dark cherry, plum and forest berries are layered with spice, dried herbs and a gamey, earthy complexity, and the palate is dense and structured with firm, fine tannins. It rewards a decade or more in the cellar.
