Les Clous is a village climat lying to the west of Meursault. Its soils are largely marl, much like those of the Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne, with only the altitude and lie of the land setting it apart. Vincent Girardin's Chardonnay vines here average around 45 years of age.
Fruit is hand-harvested with sorting in the vineyard, lightly trodden and pressed, then fermented in 228 litre French oak barrels, 15% new, on indigenous yeasts and bacteria. The wine rests for around 15 months on its fine lees without lees stirring before a light fining and filtration ahead of bottling.
In the glass it is bright and golden, with a fine nose of citrus. The palate is mineral and tightly framed by very good acidity, which gives it the backbone to age well in the cellar. Pair it with grilled, poached or sauced fish, foie gras or cheese.
The house is based at Les Champs Lins in Meursault. Vincent Girardin started out in 1980 with two hectares of family vines and sold the business in 2012 to Jean-Pierre Nié, a long-standing partner, with winemaker Eric Germain staying on to keep the style intact.
