A Rosso di Montalcino from Uccelliera, the small family estate of Andrea Cortonesi in Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the south-eastern side of Montalcino. Andrea took over a family farm in 1986 and released his first wines in the early 1990s, quickly earning a cult reputation. The Rosso is produced in very limited quantities from vineyards that in many cases are classified to produce Brunello.
100% Sangiovese (Brunello) from around 7 hectares of vines in the township of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, grown on loose, stony soils with a warm microclimate. Expect a silky, fragrant red with wild strawberry, crushed cherry, dried herbs and savoury spice, leading into a bright, focused palate with juicy acidity, fine tannins and the kind of tension and length that punch well above its weight class.
Grapes ferment spontaneously on the skins for 25–30 days, including around a week of cryomaceration under dry ice to preserve fruit freshness. No selected yeasts since 2003. Aged in a mix of Slavonian oak cask and French oak for around 4–6 months before bottling.
