Il Macchione sits in the hills of Montepulciano in southern Tuscany, where brothers Leonardo and Simone Abram farm Prugnolo Gentile — the local name for Sangiovese — without herbicides or synthetic treatments. Their Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is assembled from roughly 90% Sangiovese with a traditional top-up of Mammolo and Canaiolo Nero.
The 2021 is a classic, structured Nobile — dark cherry, ripe plum and wild berry fruit laced with violets, dried herbs and a touch of liquorice. The palate is full-bodied and firm, with grippy tannins and a long, earthy finish that mirrors the sun-drenched Tuscan clay and tufa on which the vines are planted. Extended oak ageing (around 30 months) lends depth and savoury complexity without smothering the fruit.
A true food wine — ideal with slow-braised meats, wild game, aged pecorino and traditional pici al ragù.
