A single-Contrada Etna Rosso from Tenuta delle Terre Nere, the northern-slope estate on Mount Etna founded by Marco de Grazia. Terre Nere was the first estate on Etna to vinify its Contrade (crus) separately, from its inaugural 2002 harvest, and has been central to the formal recognition of Etna's historical sub-zones. Organically farmed.
Nerello Mascalese (with a small percentage of Nerello Cappuccio) from Contrada Santo Spirito on the lower terraces of the northern slope, between 600 and 800 metres. Soils are a deep, fine volcanic ash so dark it calls to mind talcum powder. Expect an aromatic, charmer-style Etna Rosso with wild strawberry, rose petal, black tea and dried herbs, leading into an elegant, medium-bodied palate with fresh acidity, fine chalky tannins and the high-altitude tension and salinity that mark the best wines of Etna.
Hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak (a mix of new and used) for around 16–18 months before bottling. Bottled with minimal intervention.
