A single-vineyard Etna Bianco from Tenuta delle Terre Nere, the estate founded by Marco de Grazia on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Since its first harvest in 2002, Terre Nere has been a pioneer in mapping and vinifying Etna's historical Contrade (crus) separately - the first estate to do so - drawing an explicit parallel between Etna's single-vineyard Nerello Mascalese and Carricante and the great terroirs of Burgundy. Organically farmed.
This cuvée is drawn from a tiny, very old vineyard at around 950 metres elevation on the southern slope of Etna, in a locality known as Montalto (not formally classified as a Contrada). Vines are around 60–90+ years old, trained as alberello on deep volcanic ash soils. A blend led by Carricante with Catarratto, Grecanico, Minnella and a little Inzolia - all old-vine field-blend varieties. Expect a vibrating, high-altitude Etna white with tropical fruit, white flowers, white pepper and aromatic herbs on the nose, and a vertical, precise palate where finely balanced acidity and mineral drive carry a piercing citrus line through to a long finish.
Hand-harvested, then fermented and aged in 10-hectolitre barrels, in Terre Nere's terroir-first, minimal-intervention style.
