Sarget de Gruaud Larose is the second wine of Château Gruaud Larose, the Second Growth that sits inland from the village of Saint-Julien on deep gravel over clay. It was introduced with the 1981 vintage and takes its name from the Sarget family, owners of the estate in the nineteenth century.
The wine comes from the same vineyard as the grand vin, made by the same team from the lots not selected for it. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend with Merlot in support and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and maturation is in French oak barrels with a modest share of new wood.
It is a rounder, earlier drinking take on the Gruaud Larose style: plum and dark cherry with cedar, tobacco and a savoury, earthy note, carried on finely grained tannins. Medium to full bodied and nicely balanced, it drinks well within a few years of release.
