Le Difese is the youngest member of the Tenuta San Guido family, the Bolgheri estate of the Incisa della Rocchetta family that is famous the world over as the home of Sassicaia. First made in 2002, it was conceived as the estate's welcome to wine lovers: an approachable introduction to the San Guido style at an earlier-drinking stage than its celebrated siblings.
The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, bringing together the Bordeaux variety that made Bolgheri's reputation with Tuscany's signature red grape. It is bottled under the Toscana IGT classification, and in keeping with the estate's philosophy it is fermented without added commercial yeasts before a period of maturation in oak barriques.
Expect a medium-bodied, fresh and juicy red, with dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit, a savoury, herbal Tuscan edge from the Sangiovese, and fine, supple tannins. It is generous enough to enjoy young, yet carries the poise and balance that run right through the San Guido range, making it an easy match for pasta, grilled meats and hard cheeses.
