Les Chétillons is one of the most celebrated single vineyards in all of Champagne, a lieu-dit in the grand cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger where deep chalk produces Chardonnay of extraordinary tension and longevity. Champagne Robert Moncuit owns 2.17 hectares there, with some of the vines planted back in the 1950s.
The family story begins in 1889, when Alex Moncuit bought his first parcels in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. His grandson Robert started bottling under his own name in 1928, working only with Chardonnay from grand cru sites, and the house is now led by Pierre Amillet, the fourth generation, who farms around ten hectares in Le Mesnil and Oger along organic lines.
Finished as an extra brut with very little dosage, this is blanc de blancs at its most serious. Lemon, white peach and quince are wrapped in brioche, toasted almond and a deep, saline chalk minerality, and the palate is razor sharp yet remarkably long and complete. It is drinking beautifully now and has decades ahead of it.
