Valferana is one of the great historical crus of Gattinara, a tightly defined parcel on the porphyry-rich slopes above the town. Since taking over the Nervi estate in 2018, Roberto Conterno (of the famous Barolo house) has been steering this Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo with a quiet, careful hand, and the cru bottlings have quickly emerged as some of the most sought-after wines in the region.
The 2021 is a serious, mineral-driven Gattinara. Bright ruby in the glass, the nose layers red cherry, wild strawberry and rose petal with dried herbs, white pepper, iron and crushed rock. The palate is powerful yet vivid, with tightly woven, fine-grained tannins, a juicy core and an intensely saline finish that drives long and clean. Best served decanted, or laid down for the medium to long term.
A wine for considered occasions: aged Parmigiano, truffle risotto, braised game or a slow-roasted shoulder of veal.
