Molsino is one of the great single-vineyard sites of Gattinara, a south-facing, porphyry-soiled cru on the steep slopes above the town. Since taking over the historic Nervi estate in 2018, Roberto Conterno (of the famous Barolo house) has brought a quiet, careful hand to these Alto Piemonte crus, and Molsino has emerged as one of the most coveted Nebbiolos in northern Italy.
The 2021 is dense, creamy and quietly expansive. Dark cherry, ripe pomegranate and leather lead, layered with sweet spice, dried flowers and a savoury, freshly baked-bread note that builds with air. The palate is at once vigorous and elegant, with finely woven tannins, a vibrant mineral spine and a long, salty, persistent finish. One of the great cellar candidates from the region.
A wine for very special occasions: white truffle pasta, slow-braised veal shank, aged game or a board of Piedmontese hard cheeses.
