Prophet's Rock is a Central Otago estate founded in 1999 in the Bendigo sub-region, with winemaker Paul Pujol at the helm since 2005. The Cuvée aux Antipodes range is a meeting of two hemispheres, a collaboration between Pujol and François Millet, former winemaker at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé for 35 vintages.
Since its first release in 2015 the Cuvée aux Antipodes Pinot Noir has been sourced exclusively from a single parcel on the Home Vineyard, a steep glacial terrace at 320-390 metres elevation on some of the oldest vineyard soils in the valley (approximately 650,000 years old), with an unusual clay and pedogenic lime structure over a thick layer of chalk 50-80cm down. The site has been organically certified (BioGro) since prior to the 2018 vintage.
The 2020 is the product of a cool vintage with tiny yields of 20 hl/ha. Aged in 33% new oak for 17 months, racked cask to cask and bottled unfiltered, it shows charred bark, dark cherries, black raspberries, cumin, iodine and slate on the nose, with a medium- to full-bodied palate, a firm, sleek tannin structure and a tight, mineral finish.
