La Petite Montagne is Chardonnay grown in L'Étoile, a small and highly regarded corner of the Jura named for the star-shaped fossils scattered through its soils. It is one of the most distinctive white wine pockets in eastern France, and the choice of it says a good deal about a Burgundian grower looking for limestone with a different accent.
The nose is clear and precise, with lemon, greengage and white flowers over a subtle toasted almond note. The palate is bright and tautly drawn, with a fine mineral grain, a savoury saline thread and a long, dry, refreshing finish.
Pierre Girardin is the thirteenth generation of his family in Burgundy and founded his own estate at Meursault in 2016, releasing his first cuvée at nineteen. Everything he makes, in Burgundy or the Jura, is fermented naturally and raised in oversized barrels so the oak stays firmly in the background.
